Changing furniture design for computer incorporation

Friday, October 8th, 2010

The tremendous change in office furniture that has taken place over the last 20 years is its evolution so as to accommodate computers and information technology devices. Items such as filing cabinets were always long and tall so as to hold a huge volume of standard size files. These pieces of office furniture had absolutely no function. Today that same filing cabinet is desk high so that its top surface can double as space for a computer printer. Our office desks themselves are actually built so as to better accommodate computers as well. Very often the traditional pencil drawer has been replaced with a sliding platform or a computer keyboard.

There still remains a need for the traditional look in executive office furniture. Lawyers, accountants and some bankers will no doubt be buying cordovan leather chairs 100 years from now. But if you look closely at those same chairs you’ll notice that they now have built in height adjustment and lumbar support. These changes have been made to accommodate line of sight to monitors and more time spent at one’s work station.

The ease of picking out new office furniture online

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Last week I purchased a new office desk. To be frank the time I spent shopping for the desk and arranging to bring it back to my office probably cost me as much as the desk itself. I liked the office desk but I couldn’t imagine how to pick up and install the 12 more of these I need for our work stations. The solution came to me when I did a search engine look for this exact same desk on the Internet.

Not only did I discover that unfortunately I paid too much for my one office desk, but I also found out that when I purchase office desks and other office furniture online I get free delivery of those items to anywhere in the mainland United Kingdom. I would almost be annoyed at paying too much for the first desk if it weren’t for the great amount of savings in time and money that finding my items online gave me.

The increasingly popular feature of adjustable height in office desks

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

A great new trend in office desks these days is the inclusion of adjustable height. For decades the traditional office desk heath was frozen at 30 inches. Now desks are being manufactured with easy quick adjustments on pedestals and legs. One might ask, why not just leave the desk height alone and lower or raise one’s chair?

Because so much work is done with computers of late we need to maintain certain focal angles from seat to monitor. Simply adjusting seat height does not always accommodate this. On a similar note people have different arm lengths and need to be able to reach keyboards. An adjustable height office desk can actually help avoid carpal tunnel syndrome. Another great feature of many adjustable height office desks is their ability to be raised and tilted and used for draughtsman tables. This makes a super high tech look as well.

Healthy posture is being integrated into the modern office

Not too long ago the height of status for an executive office would have been a deeply cushioned plush leather office chair. Today top management is more concerned with comfort than appearances. With an overall trend towards health, office chairs now incorporate many important ergonomic design elements. In fact most of the more comfortable executive office chairs might seem odd and out of place.

Take for example ergonomic mesh office chairs. With their exposed adjustment elements and wide plastic laced fabric in lieu of leather, one could not imagine that these were more comfortable than a batting stuffed leather Queen Anne chair, but indeed they are. Of course it is a difficult task to blend form with function. Consider however designer office chairs such as the famous mid-century modern Eames chair and its comfort elements. Mesh office chairs might be all the rage in the moment but within a few years all the ergonomic design elements they incorporate will be available in a leather reclining office chair.

Ergonomic elements built into current office chair styles

When the first ergonomic chairs were developed some 30 years ago they were funny looking items. Most had no backs and required the settee to put their legs underneath them sell so as to maintain balance. To be frank these were no more than a novelty and for the most part completely worthless. They did have a stylish look. Unknown to us all the time was that the design elements of ergonomic office chairs were extraordinarily sound.

Such ideas as adjustable lumbar support and foot placement for better circulation were completely valid. Today when we look at an ergonomic office chair it in no way resembles those early models. The ergonomic office chair we buy today looks for the most part exactly like any conventional chair. However the differences are most important. Completely adjustable seat height allows for proper line of sight viewing of computer monitors. Adjustable armrests are extremely important so as to not tear upon chest muscles.

Changes in workspace design for the paperless office

I don’t know how many people reading this remember what a Wooten desk is. Before the time of Charles Dickens an office desk was a huge round steamer trunk of a project. This desk would unlock in the center and unfold so as to create a work area. Each segment of the Wooten desk contained dozens of stores and cubbyholes. These were essential in a business era revolving around tiny slips of paper. A nicely restored Wooten desk sells for around $20,000 today. Yet that piece of office furniture would hardly serve us well as a modern computer desk.

With 90% of our record keeping and correspondence being done electronically we obviously have little need for drawers, shelves and cubbys. Modern computer centric office desks are quite simpler than their parents and need only a flat surface from which to set a monitor, a slide out keyboard shelf, and perhaps some type of shelf built to hold a computer mini tower.

Ensuring comfort while working at your computer desk

It is amazing and amusing that when we purchase office furniture for our home business we tend to make sure our desk is designed to accommodate our computer. When purchased as an adjunct to home décor a computer desk is very often matched in color and style to our other furnishings. Yet when we purchase desks for our office we very often forget that the single most important worker component is the PC.

We as employees often find ourselves confined to our work area for a dozen hours at a time. For this reason our environment must be extraordinarily comfortable and efficient. A proper computer desk can make this possible. When you purchase office desks for your business think in terms of new features designed to accommodate the information age. Computer desks are now available with adjustable height. This is essential as even though a an ergonomic office chair will obviously move up or down adjustment of desk height better suits line of sight to computer monitors and proper keyboard reach. These factors are essential in reducing worker fatigue.

Picking a filing cabinet to store specific paper sizes

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Recently I was shopping for office furniture online along with other machines. I was surprised to learn that an in-office binding system I was looking at would actually be arriving to me by way of Hong Kong. This in itself would not trouble me as I realize we now live in a global marketplace. But because the item I was looking at is designed to bind books and business reports it was important that I have a model built to accommodate standard UK letter sizes. These differ from those used in other countries such as the United States.

A little more examination showed me that many other items I took for granted to be designed for UK usage are not. One of these common office furniture pieces is filing cabinets. Filing cabinets for use in the United Kingdom are designed to accommodate A4 and A3 paper sizes. If I were to purchase a metal filing cabinet on the Internet from a shop not located in the UK, there’s a great chance I would receive a cabinet that my paperwork would not fit into.

Moving heavy metal office furniture with only your mouse

Metal filing cabinets are generally sturdy heavy office storage systems built using welded sheet metal. Interior components such as drawers and bearings are also made of steel. All of this makes the two, three and four drawer vertical file storage units rather heavy in weight. And they generally do not disassemble. Remember, they are welded together. So how then does one purchase a quantity of quality heavy duty filing cabinets. Consider that a single well built four drawer metal filing cabinet can weigh as much as 100 pounds.

So how does one purchase 6 or more of these for an office? The answer is to purchase metal filing cabinets on the Internet. Most of the best online office furniture stores sell filing cabinets completely assembled with a price including free delivery to anywhere in the mainland United Kingdom. Because they are already assembled, all that is required upon delivery is to remove them from their boxes and fill them with new files.

Furniture beyond your workspace, yet vital to your office

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Office furniture is much more than a simple rectangular desk and executive leather office chair. Office furniture has come to include reception furniture, work stations and all of the modular pieces needed to support both. Desks pressed one against the other in endless rows in huge cavernous rooms where dozens of men grind away at accounting are no longer needed.

Today modern office furniture is setup as quadruple workstations that have privacy screens built in. The sharp edged rectangular desk has been replaced with a round cornered model better suited to workers exchanging documents quickly. Those new coordinated workstations are even designed with adjustable height tables and chairs. Station operators can spend a dozen hours a day in their work area. Comfort must be a factor. Ergonomic office furniture allows workers to remain in place longer without breaks. This of paramount importance for businesses offering support and help desk functions.
