Last week I purchased a new office desk. To be frank the time I spent shopping for the desk and arranging to bring it back to my office probably cost me as much as the desk itself. I liked the office desk but I couldn’t imagine how to pick up and install the 12 more of these I need for our work stations. The solution came to me when I did a search engine look for this exact same desk on the Internet.
Not only did I discover that unfortunately I paid too much for my one office desk, but I also found out that when I purchase office desks and other office furniture online I get free delivery of those items to anywhere in the mainland United Kingdom. I would almost be annoyed at paying too much for the first desk if it weren’t for the great amount of savings in time and money that finding my items online gave me.

A great new trend in office desks these days is the inclusion of adjustable height. For decades the traditional office desk heath was frozen at 30 inches. Now desks are being manufactured with easy quick adjustments on pedestals and legs. One might ask, why not just leave the desk height alone and lower or raise one’s chair?
Because so much work is done with computers of late we need to maintain certain focal angles from seat to monitor. Simply adjusting seat height does not always accommodate this. On a similar note people have different arm lengths and need to be able to reach keyboards. An adjustable height office desk can actually help avoid carpal tunnel syndrome. Another great feature of many adjustable height office desks is their ability to be raised and tilted and used for draughtsman tables. This makes a super high tech look as well.

Not too long ago the height of status for an executive office would have been a deeply cushioned plush leather office chair. Today top management is more concerned with comfort than appearances. With an overall trend towards health, office chairs now incorporate many important ergonomic design elements. In fact most of the more comfortable executive office chairs might seem odd and out of place.
Take for example ergonomic mesh office chairs. With their exposed adjustment elements and wide plastic laced fabric in lieu of leather, one could not imagine that these were more comfortable than a batting stuffed leather Queen Anne chair, but indeed they are. Of course it is a difficult task to blend form with function. Consider however the famous midcentury modern Eames chair and its comfort elements. Mesh office chairs might be all the rage in the moment but within a few years all the ergonomic design elements they incorporate will be available in a leather reclining office chair.

When the first ergonomic chairs were developed some 30 years ago they were funny looking items. Most had no backs and required the settee to put their legs underneath them sell so as to maintain balance. To be frank these were no more than a novelty and for the most part completely worthless. They did have a stylish look. Unknown to us all the time was that the design elements of ergonomic office chairs were extraordinarily sound.
Such ideas as adjustable lumbar support and foot placement for better circulation were completely valid. Today when we look at an ergonomic office chair it in no way resembles those early models. The ergonomic office chair we buy today looks for the most part exactly like any conventional chair. However the differences are most important. Completely adjustable seat height allows for proper line of sight viewing of computer monitors. Adjustable armrests are extremely important so as to not tear upon chest muscles.

I don’t know how many people reading this remember what a Wooten desk is. Before the time of Charles Dickens an office desk was a huge round steamer trunk of a project. This desk would unlock in the center and unfold so as to create a work area. Each segment of the Wooten desk contained dozens of stores and cubbyholes. These were essential in a business era revolving around tiny slips of paper. A nicely restored Wooten desk sells for around $20,000 today. Yet that piece of office furniture would hardly serve us well as a modern computer desk.
With 90% of our record keeping and correspondence being done electronically we obviously have little need for drawers, shelves and cubbys. Modern computer desks are quite simpler than their parents and need only a flat surface from which to set a monitor, a slide out keyboard shelf, and perhaps some type of shelf built to hold a computer mini tower.

It is amazing and amusing that when we purchase office furniture for our home business we tend to make sure our desk is designed to accommodate our computer. When purchased as an adjunct to home décor a computer desk is very often matched in color and style to our other furnishings. Yet when we purchase desks for our office we very often forget that the single most important worker component is the PC.
We as employees often find ourselves confined to our work area for a dozen hours at a time. For this reason our environment must be extraordinarily comfortable and efficient. A proper computer desk can make this possible. When you purchase office desks for your business think in terms of new features designed to accommodate the information age. Computer desks are now available with adjustable height. This is essential as even though a an ergonomic office chair will obviously move up or down adjustment of desk height better suits line of sight to computer monitors and proper keyboard reach. These factors are essential in reducing worker fatigue.

Recently I was shopping online for office furniture and other machines. I was surprised to learn that an in-office binding system I was looking at would actually be arriving to me by way of Hong Kong. This in itself would not trouble me as I realize we now live in a global marketplace. But because the item I was looking at is designed to bind books and business reports it was important that I have a model built to accommodate standard UK letter sizes. These differ from those used in other countries such as the United States.
A little more examination showed me that many other items I took for granted to be designed for UK usage are not. One of these common office furniture pieces is filing cabinets. Filing cabinets for use in the United Kingdom are designed to accommodate A4 and A3 paper sizes. If I were to purchase a metal filing cabinet on the Internet from a shop not located in the UK, there’s a great chance I would receive a cabinet that my paperwork would not fit into.

Metal filing cabinets are generally sturdy heavy office storage systems built using welded sheet metal. Interior components such as drawers and bearings are also made of steel. All of this makes the two, three and four drawer vertical file storage units rather heavy in weight. And they generally do not disassemble. Remember, they are welded together. So how then does one purchase a quantity of quality heavy duty filing cabinets. Consider that a single well built four drawer metal filing cabinet can weigh as much as 100 pounds.
So how does one purchase 6 or more of these for an office? The answer is to purchase metal filing cabinets on the Internet. Most of the best online office furniture stores sell filing cabinets completely assembled with a price including free delivery to anywhere in the mainland United Kingdom. Because they are already assembled, all that is required upon delivery is to remove them from their boxes and fill them with new files.

Office furniture is much more than a simple rectangular desk and executive leather office chair. Office furniture has come to include reception room furniture, work stations and all of the modular pieces needed to support both. Desks pressed one against the other in endless rows in huge cavernous rooms where dozens of men grind away at accounting are no longer needed.
Today modern office furniture is setup as quadruple workstations that have privacy screens built in. The sharp edged rectangular desk has been replaced with a round cornered model better suited to workers exchanging documents quickly. Those new coordinated workstations are even designed with adjustable height tables and chairs. Station operators can spend a dozen hours a day in their work area. Comfort must be a factor. Ergonomic office furniture allows workers to remain in place longer without breaks. This of paramount importance for businesses offering support and help desk functions.

The tremendous change in office furniture that has taken place over the last 20 years is its evolution so as to accommodate computers and information technology devices. Items such as filing cabinets were always long and tall so as to hold a huge volume of standard size files. These pieces of office furniture had absolutely no function. Today that same filing cabinet is desk high so that its top surface can double as space for a computer printer. Our office desks themselves are actually built so as to better accommodate computers as well. Very often the traditional pencil drawer has been replaced with a sliding platform or a computer keyboard.
There still remains a need for the traditional look in office furniture. Lawyers, accountants and some bankers will no doubt be buying cordovan leather chairs 100 years from now. But if you look closely at those same chairs you’ll notice that they now have built in height adjustment and lumbar support. These changes have been made to accommodate line of sight to monitors and more time spent at one’s work station.

It seems odd that today executive desks are likely to have holes drilled all over them. Yes, the longstanding huge monster of a rectangular wooden desk has probably seen the last of its better days. Today we opt for round cornered plasticized desktops without file drawers that are built to accommodate the plentitude of digital devices that will be stashed all across are desk. Indeed, the primary of these, our computer monitor actually is referred to on its own as a desktop.
The look of power and success for executive desks now seems to center around oval or kidney shapes in either a durable plastic or glass top. The aforementioned holes are created to allow us to run the dozens of cables required for computer monitors, keyboards and printers. It is not unusual today for even senior members of management to have a desktop computer at one end of their desk and the laptop on the other. Being an executive today means much more than delegating authority to many others. As we all rely upon information technology, we must use that garnered knowledge to guide us in directing our business.

For years I thought that ergonomic office furniture was a selection of chairs without backs that one was forced to contort themselves in order to be seated in. While this may have been true in the 1970s, when ergonomics came into play as a catch phrase for new designs specifically created to accommodate the human body, today ergonomic office furniture consists of a new generation of design elements that have been built into traditional office furniture construction. How is this done?
The premise of the original ergonomic design for office furniture was simply that we would support the lower back, arms and legs by use of current comfortable support points. The same elements now manifest themselves in our conventional office chairs as lumbar support and comfortable armrests set at specific heights, so as to support the upper body. Chair heights being adjustable allow for better lower leg circulation and proper line of sight to the now mandatory computer monitors.

There is really only one way to find discount office furniture. No, it isn’t by scouring the papers for super sales from your local office supply shop. And while one might find low prices on office furniture by purchasing it used, seldom does used furniture have much life remaining in it. This is especially true when looking at office chairs, as they tend to wear out quite quickly.
The way to find great prices for furniture for the office is simply to shop online. The Internet is the one place where discount office furniture can easily be located. Why is this? Well, very simply, Internet suppliers do not have to absorb the expense of fancy showrooms and salaried employees. In addition to this, online showrooms do not have built into their overhead cost of warehousing and excess shipping. All of these measures of savings allow an Internet office furniture shop to make a greater profit for themselves even after giving you the finest quality office furniture available at prices roughly half that of a brick and mortar retail shop.

Purchasing a selection of designer office furniture does not mean that your desk must carry the familiar red white and blue logo of Tommy Hilfiger. Nor does it mean that a huge D&G or CC should be burned into glass for your desktop. Designer office furniture created for 2009 and beyond simply allows for greater functionality, as determined by worker and management needs of today. More simply put, we work differently today than we did as recently as 25 years ago.
Obviously this change and it’s resulting change in our office furniture needs is based on one item. That item is of course the personal and office computer. Desktops must accommodate space requirements for computer monitors and keyboards with many office workers needing space for two or more of each. Office chairs are built to withstand the far greater weights of the average worker. Basically we are heavier and we need to reach more therefore our office furniture is designed so as to allow a greater ease of movement.

I suppose 50 years ago in labeling what was considered contemporary office furniture you would simply have thought in terms of designs created by men like Charles Eames. Those ultramodern creations built from laminated wood and diamond tufted leather were extraordinarily comfortable and put forth a dynamic impression of success. Today, that same theme continues as modern materials such as plastics and further developed wood laminates are used to mass produce comfortable yet inexpensive contemporary office furniture.
While we may eschew the chrome and glass look popular in the 1970s, those same materials are primarily medians in an office suite created for the age of information technology. The huge mahogany or walnut rectangular executive desk has found limited appeal. It’s primarily placement being for legal or financial offices. Today’s executive needs to appear as if he or she is completely in touch with every recent technological development. This is exemplified by the design and construction of their office furniture.

10 years ago, office furniture suppliers in the United Kingdom could not have imagined closing their retail outlets and switching the majority of their sales to the Internet. Indeed, the original dot com bubble burst seemed to prove conclusively that large items could not be profitably sold online. Several changes had to occur before sale of items such as executive office desks and leather office chairs could be successfully promoted on the Internet. The first of these was that personal computing had to expand in quality, allowing users to view high resolution if not three dimensional views of products under consideration to purchase. The ability to zoom in for close-ups and virtually circle items allow potential buyers to uncover any flaws in the merchandise.
The other major development required for successful sales by office furniture suppliers was the creation of successful delivery networks. These trucking concerns sprang up across the United Kingdom almost overnight. They constantly deliver everything from lightbulbs to bathtubs to cities anywhere in the mainland UK within 48 hours from the time of purchase. These two unique developments allowed potential office furniture customers in the United Kingdom to quickly choose items and just as quickly receive them.

Setting up office interiors does not require the assistance of a decorator. Anyone with a little common sense can create a beautiful office environment simply by choosing the elements of that environment wisely. Basic components of a professional office include wall hangings such as paintings and graphics, flooring, that being the choice of carpet or hard surfaces, and of course office furniture. The first set of items to purchase when setting up office interiors will be furniture consisting of desks, chairs, tables and storage cabinetry.
A little common sense shows us that professional offices such as that for lawyers and banking types are more apt to be created with a traditional conservative approach. Medical offices require treatment that affords quick cleaning and the image of a sterile environment. Companies specializing in public relations probably are looking for slick glass and chrome office desks matched with ergonomic mesh office chairs. Paintings’s and photography can be easily chosen to match the furniture style. Choice of flooring materials will obviously depend upon the size of the room and the expected amount of traffic. All of these as you can see are simple choices that anyone can make that allow them to create an interior decorator quality environment.

When shopping for desks, chairs and office accessories, there’s no need to look for an office furniture sale. If your objective is to save money on office furniture for one room or for one thousand, your best option is to purchase that furniture through honest reputable Internet merchants. Wide-scale use of the internet has grown to such a degree that almost every item for sale has been examined and reviewed. The same follows for online merchants, as it is impossible to take advantage of the customer and have it go unreported.
Regular pricing points for office furniture on the Internet are actually lower than those available during any retail office furniture sale. When one factors in the free shipping which is offered by almost every online office furniture merchant and the obvious amount of time that is saved by shopping online, it becomes imperative that buyers for a home office or the workplace take advantage of this ongoing opportunity to purchase what are generally known to be expensive items at great low prices. A simple search on the Internet for common items such as black leather office chairs or cheap office furniture returns a high quality list of honest Internet merchants.

The way to shop for quality office furniture is not to hop in your car and drive through all of the United Kingdom traveling from city to city, shop to shop. Especially when you consider that should you happen to find exactly the large size executive office desk you are looking for, you still would need to pay for its transport and delivery to your workplace. Today, with quality 3D pictures of any type of item for sale placed on websites so that you can easily inspect the goods, there is no need whatsoever to travel about on an office furniture safari.
From the comfort of your desktop, you can easily purchase one item or 1000 from reputable sellers that have all been compared and reviewed also on the Internet. And should you need human to human contact and specific information, almost every reputable quality office furniture company offers cost free telephone support. This been made available for those of us who seem to have a little trouble navigating through online shopping carts. Considering that the range of office products available on the Internet is virtually endless, it is no wonder that almost 25% of all United Kingdom office furniture sales take place on the net.

When trying to find a great deal on office furniture desks are one item that you should certainly shop for online. The reasons for this are numerous. To begin with, in areas with a limited geographic scope such as the United Kingdom, even the largest high ticket desk has included in its price free delivery. If you are situated in a broader expanse such as the United States you can still shop online for your desk but you will need to just try to find a seller within your region.
Another very important reason why shopping on the Internet for desks is a very good idea is that the range of styles, sizes and colors is almost infinite. No one store can afford to stock 1000 different executive desks. Also consider that the competitive nature of the Internet and the fact that one can compare prices at an instant forces sellers to cut their prices to a minimum profit. And should you discover that a specific item is overpriced at one web retailer, is a simple matter to run a search for the exact same model and await a cavalcade of new results and options.

Since the beginning of its popularity in the early 1900s, oak office furniture has been somewhat the poor stepchild in the realm of the executive office suite. But today as the vast majority of office furniture in general often does not contain a splinter of actual wood, the value of solid oak furniture for the office or the home has increased tremendously. And even in a world where ergonomic design has taken over every aspect of office furniture, the traditional look and feel of an oak swivel chair remains extremely popular.
And no discussion of oak furniture for the office is complete without a reminder of the immense desirability of both antique original and reproduction replicas of the famous roll top desk. Though this particular design is at least half a century beyond its heyday many people continue to seek these out for their value as home office décor. An amusing twist on the traditional roll top desk is that now these are being made with cutaways built in so as to allow desktop computers to secretly hide beneath the roll top covering. Now if we could just find a way to get lumbar support into the original oak swivel chair.

When shopping for office furniture UK customers will be far better served by beginning and ending their purchasing on the Internet. The simple truth is that, especially for those people living in outlying areas, the cost of transport, warehousing and display of large items such as office desks does not allow a retail shop or discount department store to effectively compete with an online office furniture establishment. Furthermore, when serving only a small area, that same retail shop will find it impossible to stock a full range of styles and sizes. So you may very well be left with choosing your executive office chair from a selection of only two.
Your choice when looking for an executive office desk may even be more limited. You will never be able to assemble your Danish modern, solid wood home office from an assortment of particle board manufactured in China. By shopping online for office furniture UK buyers are able to directly specify through the search function exactly the type of pieces they are looking for. A search for a glass top pedestal legged conference table will return exactly that. Shopping online for office furniture allows you to literally and virtually choose from the all the best makers from all around the world.

If you’ve been shopping for office furniture online, there are a few simple rules that you would be wise to follow. First and foremost, never purchase any large item online that does not include free delivery within a reasonable geographic area. Almost every furniture seller in the United Kingdom of any worth includes in their price free delivery within the mainland UK. Next, make sure that the company you plan to buy from is real. This may sound comical, but consider that it is very simple to copy pictures and pricing from legitimate business web sites and pretend you have a store that does not exist.
All that is needed to verify a company’s legitimacy is a simple telephone number. Any business that sells office furniture online should have a toll free number that you can call to confirm the details of your order. The reason you are buying this furniture on the Internet is because these particular sellers are able to give you prices far below that of a retail shop. The average percentage of savings when purchasing office furniture from an online store is approximately 40% of the average retail cost.

In looking at office furniture desk prices are likely to range anywhere from one hundred to two thousand dollars. Why the huge disparity? Well, for one thing quality of desk construction varies greatly. The main area of this variance is based upon whether not real wood is used as opposed to particleboard. And even where particleboard is used it is usually covered with high grade Formica or a quality wood veneer.
Most cheap office furniture uses what amounts to basically being printed paper as its desktop surface. This paper is coated with durable plastic finishes and in all truth will last for quite some time but it may not be part of the image you hope to project. When purchasing office furniture, desk top construction is the most important factor to consider. Fully 95% of all executive office desks will still be created using a particleboard top. So make sure that top is at least 1 1/8 inch thick. And make sure it is covered with either a quality plastic coating for a high tech office or a real wood veneer for executive suites in professions such as the law or banking.

When shopping for office furniture chairs are of course one of the main considerations for purchase. But, as low priced as office chairs may be, choosing the right ones for the right operator functions can be a bit difficult. There are several factors that must be taken into account when choosing office chairs for various departments of your business. When purchasing chairs for conference or boardrooms, I think in terms of a grand leather backed reclining chair. Today’s conference is a process of opening laptops, passing folders and generally coordinating departmental movement.
Simple operator chairs to be used at workstations can be purchased without amenities such as the lumbar support and armrests. However, if workers are apt to be sitting in the same position for 4 hours per stretch, a more comfortable seat allows for a longer attention span to production. Offices in warmer climates can benefit from mesh office chairs that allow for cooling through the open weave. One of the most important features of any office chair is the ergonomic elements built into its design. Back and shoulder support are essential in any chair that a worker will be seated in for more than 1 hour. Most people think that when purchasing office furniture chairs are the easiest item to find. This may be true, but finding the right chair takes a little research.

On a recent trip through Wal-Mart I noticed a very attractive two piece home office set that included a small modest in size desk and an accompanying printer stand. The desk featured a black satin metal tubular design with an inset glass desktop. The printer stand was built to match but obviously a smaller scale. The interesting thing to note about this particular desk set was that it was completely designed and created for use at home with one’s computer. Further studies have shown me that home computer furniture has become a major office supplies sales outlet.
Not only are many people working at home in small businesses, there is also a huge percentage of us working for larger companies but allowing for at least a portion of our 40 hour workweek to be performed out of our home. The main impetus for this flextime from home situation is centered on a general need for more efficiency and cost saving on the part of both the business and the worker. During my trip to the department store, I also noticed that most of the home computer furniture was designed to either match the interior design of a variety of homes or quietly stand alongside the homes décor.

Glass office furniture offers the consumer a wonderful opportunity to create a high tech office suite design at a very low cost. Considering that the basic structure of a large executive glass office desk is simply that of a welded or pressed steel frame with padding and a thick glass top, one can see how costs for said item might be low. However, it should be remembered that a proper thickness of glass to facilitate building a quality executive image desk may be as much as 1 inch in width. And factoring to the cost of creation that this glass positively must be made as safety glass, so that in the event of a heavy object crashing on and breaking the glass desktop, catastrophic injury will not occur. Now place into the cost equation the idea that glass is extremely heavy and in its own way to its fragility very difficult to ship.
These are the factors that make a glass desk expensive, especially when dealing with the large sized required for an executive office suite. Still glass office furniture manages to be somewhat competitive in price and offers a unique high tech look that cannot be matched with any other office furniture construction material. A similar option to the use of glass that allows for an almost identical appearance is that of Lucite. This space age material offers the translucence of glass with none of the dangers and 1/3 of the weight.

When creating the modern work environment and seeking to purchase furniture office design now incorporates the original 1950s landscape premise. The idea which was somewhat outlandish at the time was that rather than install workers into individual offices with energy consuming walls separating them and allowing communications only by means of telephones and intercoms. One might place workers into an open air structure or great room, if you will, that would allow communication by simple voice and hand movement. In the late 1950s this idea was disbanded as being socially impossible and from the standpoint of business status impractical.
As a result of the information technology boom, the entire purpose for the office environment completely changed and greater demand for what might be called cross chatter communication between workers developed. Suddenly a previously discarded idea, that of the office landscape, became not only accepted but the norm in primary WorkStation implementation and design. Of course the purpose of the open air work system was not too cram as many people into a smaller place as possible and save money but to foster conditions more conducive to productivity.

With so much of our “paperwork” now reduced to electronic impulses, one wonders if filing cabinets will soon be used only to hold our lunch. Of course this statement is made in jest too, as the use of pen and pad continue to be of paramount importance. And the people who make those post-it notes needn’t worry about going out of business anytime soon. The traditional four drawer standing upright file cabinet continues to offer protection and security to all of our printed stored documents. And the legal size drop in file type cabinets are more popular than ever, as they can be used for desktop extensions.
Filing cabinets are still available in the traditional gray and peach colored metal variety with a prerequisite key lock installed. Replicas of antique oak and mahogany cabinets are also still available, allowing one to use these pieces as functional and decorative office furniture. Almost every office furniture manufacturer includes in their product range matching meeting tables, bookcases and file cabinets. Lower profile cabinets are perfect for placement of computer printers and teleconferencing monitors.

The primary function of executive office furniture is no longer to make a grand entrance or impression. While for certain industries such as advertising and marketing it may be deemed necessary to imply wealth by means of the grand work environment. This would include the prerequisite mile long walnut rectangular desk and for the complete office suite it would include cherry finish credenzas. With millions of this type of unit still being sold worldwide, no doubt doctors, lawyers and the occasional Indian chief tend to prefer this design face. But today’s true upper level manager is an active worker contributing in creativity to every facet of his or her business.
Hence we now see executive office furniture being designed with more emphasis placed on telemetry and ease of movement vis a vis ergonomics. This means the traditional black leather executive office chair has been slightly altered to include ergonomic elements such as lumbar support and X and Y axis adjustments. The desk of today’s modern executive is preferably created with rounded corners and almost in the Jetsons style completely encompasses management, so that the corresponding easy movement swivel chair allows that same exec to reach without any strained muscle extension.
